डेनमार्क और ग्रीस के प्रिंस एंड्र्यू और प्रिंसेस एलिस के बेटे फिलिप का बचपन एक शाही खानदान में पैदा होने के बाद भी परियों की कहानी जैसा शानदार नहीं था। ग्रीक राजशाही के उजड़ने के बाद उनके परिवार को ब्रिटिश युद्धपोत पर जर्मनी भागना पड़ा था। बताया जाता है कि उनकी मां ने एक साल के बच्चे को फल के बक्से में रखा था। युवा फिलिप की राजकुमारी एलिजाबेथ से मिलने की कहानी भी काफी रोचक है। इस मुलाक़ात के वक्त एलिजाबेथ महज़ 13 साल की थीं। हालांकि ख़तों के जरिए उनका प्रेम काफी समय तक परवान चढ़ा और साल 1947 में उनकी शादी हो गई। प्रिंस फिलिप अपने बयानों को लेकर भी काफी चर्चा में रहे हैं।
